Remembering Danny Jordan

Danny Jordan (1945-12009)Danny Jordan (1945-2009)

Danny Jordan served as MIAJE President since 2005 and was formerly Coordinator of Jazz and Coordinator of Music Theory in the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance at Oakland University.  He directed the OU Jazz Band and the OU Jazz Singers, and twice performed in Varner Recital Hall for the Professional Artist Series.

Jordan became a full-time OU faculty member and music professor in 2002 after beginning as Lecturer in 1996 and then later Special Lecturer.  A graduate of Wayne State University, he held a Master of Music degree with Highest Distinction.  The OU MIAJE student chapter, for which he was the faculty advisor, provided outreach to the community while OU ensemble members traveled to national music conferences.

Jordan was also the pianist for our MIAJE Reading Band, which performed many times at state music education special events including the 2008 Detroit International Jazz Festival and the 2008 Michigan Music Conference in Grand Rapids.  He also served as adjudicator at many jazz festivals and competitions.  Jordan's career stage highlights included performing and recording (Lake Tahoe, NV; California), and tours with his pop/jazz group The Loving Cup, featuring his wife and vocalist Marlene.  In his early career he also led his own group, the Danny Jordan Jazz Ensemble.  He was in demand as a pianist and arranger for recording studios in the Detroit area, having also worked for Jobete Music during the heydays of the Motown Records era.

Jordan's warm and jovial spirit, creative piano prowess, and teaching professionalism is deeply missed by all who knew him in the music education industry.
