Jordan:
Official Welcome to all attendees. Special emphasis for our

Band at Campus Martius is terrific.
Kevin Dobreff
Treasury Report:
1. Our Michigan org is in good
fiscal standing.
2. $1,800 was
awarded (outstanding soloist awards) to DIJF High School and
Middle School students for private jazz lessons. MIAJE and
Southeast Michigan
Jazz Association (SEMJA) shared in scholarship money
awards.
3. DIJF board management changed their position this year regarding
support of
adjudicators for DIJF 2008 (middle school, high
school and college students).
Certain financial considerations were involved.
Michigan Music Conference (Grand Rapids) update for January 2009:
- MIAJE will have a presence at the
conference
- Thursday
(1/24) may
be designated a Jazz and Technology
focused day
MIAJE Reading Band update:
Bob Nixon, band director:
* J. Pepper
publishing has been willing to give Bob whatever charts he
wants
using a
credit card for a temporary purchase
* Bob suggested
possible clinics for the band and a possible
collaboration
with the West Michigan Jazz Society
* Paul Stanifer
urged the band play passages of 50 charts in a 45-minute show
Ernie Rodgers:
Make sure our MIAJE is current and up-to-date re: government reporting
(i.e. tax
exempt organizational status).
Paul Stanifer:
Regarding MIAJE @DIJF '08........
- We need to
examine MIAJE and MSBOA fit, role in the jazz
festival. The whole
concept of the jazz educational component and adjudication
requires review.
- The merits of
our participation can be better communicated.
- We seek
acceptance, plans for all student groups for '09.
- MIAJE remains
committed to selling the educational
component to DIJF.
- Discussions
with the festival board should be planned, implemented.
-
Our logo appeared in the festival program, thus our mission prompts
detail.
Ernie Rodgers:
The benefits of
the educational component and our involvement is commendable.
Paul Stanifer:
MSBOA provides a sizable investment towards the
festival.
Board suggestion:
- A strategic plan should be drafted to outline future educational
expectations, direction and an appreciation for having student
musicians each year at the jazz festival.
Board observations:
- There was no adjudication of college bands this
year.
- MIAJE did not “make the case” to festival officials
that the solo awards are tied to
adjudication of the ensembles. (The festival embraced the solo
awards
but not
adjudication).
Other Topics:
a. How will IAJE’s collapse
impact MENC?
b. President Jordan:
- Our web presence is moving forward, excellent content.
- Send jazz education news and teaching info to the web site.
c.
Marketing development:
- Plans to improve the bridge between upper & lower MI needs
priority.
- Commentaries, stories, reports is encouraged from music students re: positive
impacts on their musical
development, the rewards of the jazz edu experience.
- Forward feedback on these and other issues 24/7 via the site.
d. Virgil Rodgers:

markets.
